Establishing Growing Beds and Wind-Breaks

image

Work has started on the new growing beds, after a few months of being covered with black plastic to kill off the grass, we’re now adding a good layer of top soil, we’ve decided on 3ft wide beds, with 18 inch paths, 3ft is small enough to easily reach from either side, and 18 inches is a comfortable spacing for wheel barrow access and isn’t too narrow for kneeling in, it also happens to be perfect spacing for tractor access, so to not compact the growing bed.

The woven hazel fence will work as a windbreak to provide a bit of shelter for young plants, essential seeing as the site is very exposed and it will take a while for the willow beds to establish and even longer for the hedge to grow and get layed.
